In 2012, a convicted felon was fleeing from the police when he ran a red light in the City of Poughkeepsie and hit another car. Town of Poughkeepsie residents Shawn and Patricia Wonderly died in the crash, while the Wonderlys' two young children survived.

Today, as the Wonderly children grow up without parents, the killer, Ryan Floryan, who was wanted on a parole violation and was driving over twice the speed limit to avoid police, is serving a sentence that simply does not match the severity of the crime he committed.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo cynically waited until three days after last year's election to veto the bipartisan Veterans' Equality Act that five months earlier passed the state Senate 57-0 and the Assembly 133-1.

In his veto message, Cuomo said that the bill should be addressed in the "broader context of negotiating the state budget." Then the governor failed to include the veterans' equality proposal in his initial budget or the subsequent amendments.

Finally, some Assembly Democrats are starting to call on Sheldon Silver to resign. Assemblyman Keith Wright, the former co-chair of the New York State Democratic Party, is demanding that Silver step down. But, the vast majority, including many of our Hudson Valley representatives, are sticking with Silver. Why are Assembly Democrats Didi Barrett, Kevin Cahill and James Skoufis standing by Silver?
